Learn one spreadsheet function by applying it to a small table you understand. SUM adds values, IF chooses between results based on a condition, and COUNTIF counts cells matching a criterion. Start in a disposable practice sheet so you can change inputs and see what the formula does.
A small spreadsheet function exercise
Put the numbers 10, 20 and 30 in B2:B4. Enter “=SUM(B2:B4)” elsewhere; the result is 60. Try “=IF(B2>15,"Over","Within")”, which returns Within for 10. Then try “=COUNTIF(B2:B4,">15")”, which counts two values. The quoted words and criterion are part of the formula.
Change B2 to 25 and predict the result before checking it. Some regional settings use semicolons in place of commas. If a formula appears as text, check the leading equals sign and cell format. Apply the function to your real sheet only after the example behaves as expected.
