Most resumes rot quietly. You update your resume the week you need it, panic, and pad it with whatever you can remember from the last three years. An hour spent now, with no job on the line, produces a far better document because you are editing calmly instead of writing under deadline pressure.
Why review and update your resume is worth an hour
Recruiters spend well under a minute on a first pass. That pass rewards specificity: numbers, scope, and outcomes. When you edit without urgency you notice the vague verbs, the duties nobody asked about, and the two-line role from 2016 that could be one line. You also capture recent wins while you still remember the details that make them credible.
How to review and update your resume step by step
- 1
Dump every recent win first
Open a blank page and list what you shipped, fixed, or led in the last twelve months. Do not edit yet. Volume first.
- 2
Rewrite bullets as outcome plus method
Turn "responsible for reporting" into "cut monthly close from nine days to four." State the result, then the method.
- 3
Attach a number to half your bullets
Money, time, headcount, volume, percentage. If you truly cannot measure it, describe scope instead: how many teams, markets, or systems.
- 4
Prune backwards through time
Give the last two roles the most space. Compress anything older than ten years to one line, and delete roles that no longer fit your direction.
- 5
Fix the top third last
Your name, title line, and first three bullets carry most of the weight. Rewrite them once the rest of the page is settled.
Tips to get more out of it
- Keep a master resume with everything on it, then cut a shorter tailored copy per application rather than editing one file forever.
- Read it aloud. Any sentence you stumble over is a sentence a recruiter will skim.
- Save as PDF with a filename like Firstname-Lastname-Resume.pdf; "resume_final_v3.docx" is a bad first impression.
Ways to mix it up
Short on material? Reverse the exercise and write the job description you want, then mark which bullets you already satisfy. The gaps become your development plan. If you are happy with the content, spend the hour on layout instead: one column, real margins, consistent dates.
Review and update your resume: frequently asked questions
How long should a resume be?
One page if you have under ten years of experience, two if you have more. Length matters less than whether every line earns its space.
Should I include a summary section?
Only if it says something a recruiter cannot get from your job titles. Three sharp lines about your specialty beat a paragraph of adjectives.
Do I need to tailor it for every application?
Tailor the top third and the keywords, not the whole document. That is usually fifteen minutes of work and it materially improves screening results.
