Heart rate zones describe ranges of exercise intensity, but zone systems and individual heart rates differ. An age-based estimate is not a personal measurement or a precise threshold. Use this session to understand the display on your device and compare it with how the activity feels.
Use zones as estimates rather than exact limits
Check whether your device uses maximum heart rate, heart rate reserve or another method. Two devices can assign different labels to the same effort. The aerobic and threshold labels you see describe a training model; a formula alone does not measure your individual threshold.
The BHF describes a talk test as another way to judge moderate effort: breathing increases while conversation remains possible. This does not assign an exact numbered zone. Medication, health conditions and other factors can affect heart rate. Ask your clinician or exercise professional for individual guidance if you have a heart condition or specific restrictions.
Why learn about heart rate zone training is worth an hour
A manageable first session lets you check the instructions, try an appropriate starting point and decide what to do next. Review what suited your circumstances before increasing the scope or committing to a longer plan.
